Hristo Botev (born by the name of Hristo Botev Petkov) is one of the most famous Bulgarian poets and revolutionaries of all time. There are a lot of things that have been said about him, and yet they have never been enough, nor will they ever be… Nevertheless, it’s worth the try.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Botev is considered by all Bulgarians (and not only them, as a matter of fact) to be a symbolic historical figure and a national hero. His poetry is a prime example of the literature of the Bulgarian National Revival, though he is considered to be ahead of his contemporaries in his political, philosophical, and aesthetic views.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Botev was born in the beautiful town of Kalofer (some historians suggest he was actually born in Karlovo, and in a couple of days brought to Kalofer or a nearby village, where his father had been working). He was either born in a room inside the school his father was teaching at, or in the city itself, but some people and a few writings say that he was born in a village nearby. The father, Botyo Petkov (1815\u20131869), was a teacher and one of the most significant figures of the Bulgarian National Revival that took place towards the end of the Ottoman occupation. He had a strong influence on his son during the periods of childhood and adolescence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1863, after completing his elementary education in Kalofer, Botev was sent by his father to a high school in Odessa. While studying there, he was deeply impressed by the work of the liberal Russian poets of the day. He left high school in 1865 and spent the next two years teaching in Odessa and Bessarabia. In the meantime, he began creating his first poetic works and established strong connections with representatives of the Russian and Polish revolutionary trends. His political views soon started to take shape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Botev returned to Kalofer at the beginning of 1867, where he temporarily replaced his ill father as a teacher. Ironically, he was better at teaching than at being a student. In May, during the festivities celebrating St. Cyril and St. Methodius (it was his father who first organized such festivities for the end of school, which today corresponds to Bulgaria’s national holiday on 24th May), he made a public speech against the Ottoman authorities and the wealthy Bulgarians (whom he alleged were collaborating with the Ottomans). Botev was pressed into leaving the town as a result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hristo Botev saw the revolt as the only possible way to achieve a normal life and formed the Bulgarian Revolutionary Movement in 1875. There was an uprising in Bulgaria in 1876 which became known as the April Uprising. He organized and was part of a group of insurgents who went to Bulgaria to fight but died in the battle at Vol Mountain on 2nd June 1876.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Botevgrad, a town in western Bulgaria is named in his honour. So are some schools and sports grounds in Bulgaria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
