They occur when our visual system misinterprets information, leading to distortions in shape, size, motion, or color. While they may seem like simple tricks, optical illusions reveal how our brains process and interpret the world.

There are three main types of optical illusions: literal, physiological, and cognitive. Literal illusions create images that differ from the objects forming them, like the “Kanizsa Triangle,”where a nonexistent white triangle appears. Physiological illusions result from excessive stimulation, such as the “Hermann Grid,” where dark spots seem to appear at intersections.

Cognitive illusions involve the brain’s assumptions, as seen in the “Ames Room,” where people appear to change size due to distorted perspective. Optical illusions work because our brains rely on gestalt principles, depth cues, and color perception to interpret images. Gestalt principles explain how we group elements together, fill in gaps, and simplify visuals. Depth cues, such as shadows and relative size, can make objects appear larger or smaller than they are. Color perception plays a role in illusions like the “Checker Shadow Illusion,” where identical shades appear different due to context.

Famous illusions include the Müller-Lyer Illusion, where two equal-length lines appear different due to arrow-like ends, and the Rubin Vase, which shifts between a vase and two faces. The Spinning Dancer illusion demonstrates how perception can change based on individual interpretation.

Beyond entertainment, optical illusions have practical applications in science, psychology, and art. Scientists study them to understand vision and cognition, while artists like M.C. Escher use illusions to create impossible structures. They also influence virtual reality, user interface design, and medical imaging.

Optical illusions remind us that what we see is not always reality. They challenge our perception, highlight the brain’s complexity, and continue to captivate people in both scientific and artistic fields.

By Brigita Todorova, Ioan Georgiev, Antonia Mangarova & Maya Petkova Optical illusions are visual phenomena that trick our brains into perceiving something differently from reality.
