What I don’t like about them is that if you’re in trouble they can’t help you, because they don’t actually exist in real life and you have to be the one to save yourself.

When I think of a superhero the first thing that pops into my mind is my mother.

When I was young I didn’t understand how many responsibilities she had, but as a grown – up I get it. I get why she is always tired and why her head always hurts, I get why she always has some kind of work to do; what I don’t get is how she manages to do everything and still be a great mom, wife, headmistress and still look full of life.

Julia and her Mom

My mother is a teacher and a deputy head, so she has a lot of paperwork every day. I have seen her stay up until 1a.m. just so she can help her colleagues with their paperwork. She is a workaholic, but she is also very generous, helpful and organized. Sometimes she cooks 3 meals in one day because she just wants to be productive. And if that’s not enough reasons as to why she is my hero, she does all of this with just one hand, because she has been disabled since she was born. When she isn’t working at school, cleaning, cooking or helping me, she is working in our art store. On the whole, I think my mom is pretty awesome.

My mother is my idol; when I grow up I hope I turn out to be like her. She has changed the life of a lot of kids like me by tutoring them and continues to do so. She has raised the prestige of the school she works at while at the same time raising me, turning me into a good person just like herself. My dad and I are trying to help her with whatever we can, but the truth is that at the end of the day she is the one that helps us with our troubles and encourages us to be better people

November 2019

By Julia Ivanova (11th) These days when we hear the word “hero,” we usually think of a fictional character like Spiderman or Wonder Woman.
