Hundreds of beautiful birds have chosen to rest in the Atanasovsko Lake. In August it proved to be an extremely attractive location for dozens of bird species. Most exciting are the dozens of species of pink flamingos, which find peace and security in the pools in the northern part of the lake within the territory of the maintained reserve. 5-6 years ago, pink flamingos were a true rarity for our latitudes „We assume that they come from some of the colonies in the Maritza Delta or some of the Turkish colonies in the Mediterranean,“ said Spas Uzunov from the Biodiversity Foundation. Some of the water basins in the reservoirs of Kardzhali, the ponds in southern Thrace and the Bourgas lakes provide them with shelter and tranquility. What is important for a pink flamingo when choosing a location is where it can find food. „The pink flamingo feeds on the most loved food, not only by it, but also by many of the inhabitants of Atanasovsko Lake, which is the salty crab, sartemia. This cute crustacean is also the cause of the pink color of the waters not only of Atanasovsko Lake, „said Radost Tsoneva from the Biodiversity Foundation.
