March 3rd is one of the most cherished national holidays in Bulgaria, alongside Unification Day (September 6) and Independence Day (September 22). It fosters national pride, remembrance of historical struggles, and recognition of Bulgaria’s path to freedom.
The day marks the anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of San Stefano, ending the Russo-Turkish War (1877-1878) and liberating Bulgaria from nearly 500 years of Ottoman rule. Although the treaty initially proposed a territorially larger Bulgaria, the borders were later revised by the Congress of Berlin. Still, the 3rd of March remains a symbol of freedom and national revival.
To celebrate Liberation Day, some schools, museums, and cultural centers organize exhibitions, concerts, and educational events about Bulgarian history. The Bulgarian flag is displayed prominently and patriotic songs and literature are celebrated.
