Today we honoured the World Smile Day. It is usually celebrated on the first Friday of October. This year, however, we had the rare chance to honour it right after the World Teachers’ Day (5th October). So, the Electronic Media Club (ELS Newspaper) decided to announce a small competition – just for the fun of it!

With the help of a few students from class 9.d (graphic design), we prepared a poster with colourful smileys. There were two more ready-made designs, supplied by the Art Atelier Club. They had “holes” in the place of the human faces – just like the retro studios in the past. The task was to take a SELFIE WITH A SMILE.

Everyone was challenged to invite classmates, teachers or administration reps and take a photo with their own cellphone. The condition was that all people in the picture should be smiling. The next thing they had to do was to post the selfie on their own Instagram or Facebook account, using the hashtag:
#smileAEGburgas
Despite the short notice, in no time there were many hilarious photos shared in the above-mentioned social media channels. We have to give credit to the teachers, who were very active and took a great deal of pleasure while taking a break from their hectic daily routines…

The lucky winners were the freshmen from 8.e class, with their class teacher – Mrs. Shurelova, who had motivated them for a truly impressive idea, with a creative photo as a result. During their fifth class for the day, they asked for permission and went downstairs, in the schoolyard. All of them held hands in a circle, standing together. A few were in the centre, right in the spots for the eyes and the lips of a “smiling face”. Such a beautiful way to celebrate the World Smile Day, indeed!

Nelina, the student who had posted the photo on her Instagram account, informed us that the whole class wanted something more creative than just a selfie in front of a poster.

Well, they really did an amazing job! That is why the Editorial Board of the ELS Newspaper decided to award them as WINNERS of the competition. They received two boxes of chocolate cookies – the prize for the best photo shared on the hashtag. We were very happy to see the joyful smiles on the faces of the kids, when we handed them the award!

Of course, the second award went to the teachers, for their active participation and enthusiasm, and for the wonderful selfies with all the posters on the second floor!

It was simply a fantastic day today! We hope to get more days like that this year!
