There are several traditions associated with the holiday. One of them is eating fish. The traditional dish eaten on St. Nicholas Day is called “Ribnik”, which is carp and made with dough. According to Bulgarian tradition, St Nicholas watches over the seas and protects sailors from storms. St Nicholas represents protection and good fortune, safety during traveling, generosity, and kindness.
The holiday is particularly important to the city of Burgas because Saint Nicholas is the patron of sailors and fishermen, making his day the city’s official holiday. This year in the center of Burgas people celebrated St. Nicholas Day with a concert featuring Stefan Vuldobrev and a group named “The Usual Suspects” and the lighting of the Christmas tree in Tria Square. Slavi the Clasher, a famous YouTuber, known for his educational videos, was also there while they were lighting up the tree.
